There are lots of news that the eighth typhoon, Neoguri, is coming up our way. For some reasons, whenever I hear the news related with the typhoon Neoguri, a Noodle made by a specific company always leaps to me. According to the weather forecast, Neoguri is getting closer to Korea, while I’m ridiculously drawn to Ramyun.
Anyway the typhoon Neoguri has been named by Korea. That is why its name in English is not Racoon but Neoguri. Anybody in Japan and even Korea will have to watch this typhoon and pay attention to the track.
By the way, I’m wondering why typhoons have their own names and if there are any other typhoon names made by Korea besides Neoguri.
As typhoon sometimes can last over a week, there may often be two or more typhoons at the same region at the same time. In this case, it is necessary to distinguish typhoons to avoid confusion when weather forecast is reported. The people that named a typhoon first were weathermen in Australia, they began to name a typhoon after politicians that they hated.
After World War II, typhoons were given name by the US Air Force and Navy officially, weathermen used the names of their wives or honeys at this time. According to this tradition, the names of typhoons were female till 1978.
From 2000, 14 countries submitted 10 typhoon names respectively in their languages and 140 names are being used in rotation.
For the reference, as the additional typhoon names submitted by our country, we have more names that are Gaemi, Nari, Jangmi, Mirinae, Noru, Jebi, Goni, Megi and Doksuri.
